Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held the Open Senate Meeting to commemorate its 73rd Anniversary at the USU Auditorium on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. During the event, USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si. presented a series of the university’s strategic accomplishments at both national and international levels.
On this occasion, dr. Inke Nadia Diniyanti Lubis, PGDipPID, M.Ked(Ped)., Sp.A., Ph.D. delivered a scientific oration, while the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., and Chairperson of the USU Board of Trustees, General (Ret.) Drs. Agus Andrianto, S.H., M.H., attended the ceremony virtually.
Prof. Muryanto highlighted that USU currently has 28 internationally accredited study programs and 81 programs with “Excellent” national accreditation status. The university also launched a digital-based Plug & Play learning program involving 12 internationally accredited study programs. This initiative is supported by a digital learning center, virtual laboratories, a digital library, and inclusive facilities for students with disabilities.
Between 2020 and 2025, USU has produced 3,659 research projects with total funding of IDR 246.9 billion, along with 2,767 scientific publications garnering over 18,000 citations. Several faculty members have also received national recognition for their high H-index achievements.
The Provincial Government of North Sumatra also expressed its support for USU. Through a speech delivered by the Provincial Secretary, Togap Simangunsong, Governor Bobby Afif Nasution reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with USU in areas such as scholarships, research, internships, and the empowerment of digital MSMEs.
As of 2025, USU ranks 1,001st globally according to the World University Rankings and within the 801–1,000 band in the Times Higher Education Rankings. The university currently has 42,687 active students, 1,535 lecturers, and over 266,000 alumni who have made significant contributions across various sectors of national development.
