Universitas Sumatera Utara held the Graduation of the 4th Period of the 2023/2024 Academic Year at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Auditorium on August 21-24, 2024, with 4,101 graduates. The theme of this graduation was "Lifelong Learning and Adaptation to Change to Overcome the Uncertainty of the World of Work".
In his speech, USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., stressed the importance of lifelong education in facing future challenges. "Lifelong learning is defined as learning throughout life and enjoying every learning process. Learning is not only done through formal education; exchanging ideas and dialoguing with friends, mentors, or colleagues is called lifelong learning," said Prof. Muryanto.
Referring to LinkedIn data in 2023, the Rector explained that today's core work skills may no longer be relevant five years from now. This emphasizes the need for reskilling and continuous learning to remain competitive in the job market.
Universitas Sumatera Utara currently manages around 37,493 students and has graduated 260,677 alumni. Prof. Dr Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., highlighted that graduates of Universitas Sumatera Utara must continue to contribute to the advancement of civilization in Indonesia and the international world and be ready to face the uncertainty of the world of work by adapting and responding to changes that occur.
The Rector expressed his pride in the achievements of the graduates who achieved the cum laude title. Of the 78 graduates of the doctoral program, five of them achieved the cum laude title with the highest score in the Biology Study Program, namely Cheryl Grace Pratiwi Rumahorbo, with a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00.
In addition to praising academic achievements, the Rector gave important advice on success and resilience in facing the future.
Ending his speech, Prof. Muryanto reminded us that happiness is the most important principle in life. The world of work you enter may seem small compared to the vastness of the world. "We are eager to see what you do next after getting a degree from the Universitas Sumatera Utara. Whatever job you choose, give your best, take the opportunities you get, work freely, try everything, and most importantly, be kind to others and don't forget to stay happy," he said.
